Pencils into inks
Hello! Manga Start is on a mini-break between Chibi Month and our weekly lessons. We just got a request for a lesson on ears from Ai and I’ll be working on that!
We invite you to make requests on what you’d like to learn, anytime!
This week, I’d just like to show you a before and after inking example. This is an experiment to try high contrast shading with inks. It means to use a lot of black ink as shadows, without using greys or colors.
When experimenting with inks, it’s good to plan ahead with your pencil stage. Use your pencils to see what the ink will look like in the future! Pencil in where you might want to see the inks, and that helps to bridge the final gap between your imagination and your final piece.
Of course, there’s the last mini gap: “How different do inks look from pencils?”, so take a look for yourself and see! (click to enlarge)
Any questions, or requests? Post in the comments, and see you next week!

how about inking in shadows?
Hi Santiagochic,
usually in Manga, shadows are not inked into big black puddles like in this drawing. For example, I can think of Rosario + and One Piece as two examples! Look closely and you’ll see most shadows are not inked in. Sometimes, shadows are done with hatching or with screentone.
i see. thanks!
