Exercise 0C: How to Draw Hair
This week’s hair lesson is drawn and written by Jeannie of Gneeworks! Thank you Jeannie for this awesome overview of how to draw hair in different manga styles. Visit her site for more awesome art!
To get the most out of this lesson, it’s good to think about the basic form underneath the hair. Take a look at our Exercise 06: How to Draw a Sphere in 3d, to review how to use shading and detail to show depth and shape on a sphere! Contours, shading, and lighting will be important!
Because, underneath all that manga hair, you still need a solid sphere to give body and proportion to your drawing. So, start by sketching out the head, and lay down that circle foundation for the skull. Use some light lines to get a feel for the contours of the head, and follow those contours as you draw the hair.

Now that you’ve got a good foundation, you can think about the style you want to use.

What about ponytails, and different kinds of up-do’s?

While, on the other hand…

Here are all the files in high res, if you’d like a closer look! Thanks for coming, please check out our other exercises!
