Exercise 05: Advanced Faces 1

In Exercise 04, we learned about the proportions of the face viewed from the front.

Let’s review!

Eyes are halfway down the face.
There should be a gap of about 1 eye width between each eye!
Nose is halfway from the eyes to the chin.
The nose is as wide as an eye.
The mouth is under the nose!

In this exercise, you’re going to see how the head…
… changes when it turns to the side!!!

When drawing a turned head, you have to start thinking about “perspective”. For instance, things that are farther away look smaller. Also, objects in front should naturally block those objects in the back.

Take a look at this chart showing a turn to the side, combined with a turn downward…

Look closely how one eye gets smaller as it turns to the side. The nose and eyes also will drift downward, while staying grounded to their contour lines.

Try this craft project out!
You can turn this model head around, and keep it as a handy reference.

You can start with toilet paper tube, or a can of soda. If you start with a tp tube? cut it in half first to get better proportions!

Then, wrap a piece of paper around your tube or can, and tape it down.

Draw straight lines around the can at the 1 quarter, 1 half, and 3 quarters marks. These come from the measures you studied in Exercise 04. Next, keep a steady look at the front of the can, and draw in the eyes, nose, and mouth. Here are what ours turned out like!
